Will your spouse be able to handle the finances if something happens to you?
Pg 20-21 of “Who’s Sitting on Your Nest Egg?”
That can be especially difficult and worrisome following the unexpected death of one's spouse, particularly if that spouse was primarily in charge of the couple's finances. For example, I was contacted by a recently widowed woman who had been referred to me for financial advice. In our initial phone conversation, she told me she was very worried because of what she estimated to be less than $100,000 of net worth.
When I met with her and reviewed her portfolio, I was able to give her the good news that her personal wealth was actually about $400,000, greatly relieving the stress she was feeling. Properly invested, it would give her the financial independence she desired. Now, that may seem like an extreme case, but it's not. Instead, it underscores how unaware many people are of their personal wealth.
